Tough as Nails - Summer Newsletter

Most people couldn’t fathom riding a bike 100 miles (161 kilometers). They have not developed the physical or metal capacity to do so. Yet every July, 184 riders on 22 teams race around France on average of 161 km per day.  It’s chess on two wheels for 21 days, 3339 kilometers. And unlike other sports there is no time out when there’s a crash, just get up and pedal faster.  These athletes are literally tough as nails.  In 2014, two time Tour winner Alberto Contador, crashed and continued to pedal fifteen kms with a fractured tibia.  To put that in context, the average American couldn’t pedal a bike for nine miles.  In my quest to understand and teach optimal performance of the mind and body, I stumbled across a Doctor of Neurobiology out of Stanford named Andrew Huberman.  He often discusses Anterior Mid Cingulate Cortex, the part of the brain where grit, tenacity and resilience reside. He references studies that prove hard physical work creates a mindset of toughness and resilience.

In honor of this year’s Tour and the ridiculous grit, tenacity and aerobic capacity of the athletes we will again be hosting viewing parties and service specials. The viewing parties are Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:30pm.  Stop in for a little happy hour fun, champagne, charcuterie, and great cycling action. Specials include 30% off on diagnostics including V02max.  Regardless if you’re a cyclist, golfer or weekend warrior, this is the gold standard of metrics to highlight your fitness and pinpoint areas to work on.  The assessment includes: V02max, FTP, power to weight ratio, body composition and more.  Make sure to RSVP by clicking here.

Lastly, while we are behind on the launch of the new fitness center, we have used the extra time wisely.  This Fall we will kick off the opening with a lecture series on the topics below.  That’s it for now. Make sure to RSVP for the events and don’t miss out!  We hope to see you soon.

Hope to see you soon,

Joel
